A course primarily intended for pilots who make their own operational de-icing and anti-icing decisions. This includes private pilots as well as those who fly business, corporate, air taxi, or freight operations in fixed-wing aircraft.
Start CourseA course primarily intended for pilots who fly aircraft certified for flight into icing. With an operational focus, this course provides tools pilots can use to deal with in-flight icing.
Start CourseIn conjunction with goverment and industry experts, these courses were developed by the Icing Branch at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Contains brief definitions of a wide range of aviation and icing-related terminology.

Download the flow chart from the Ground Icing course. Use it as a Go/No-Go decision making tool.
Ground Icing Checklists
Download these checklists for use at the field. These checklists provide ground-icing related guidance from pre-flight to departure. Feel free to modify them for your particular aircraft. There are two checklists, one for protected aircraft (certified for flight in icing) and one for unprotected aircraft.
Clarence Center, NY - February 12, 2009
While on an instrument approach to Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, Buffalo, New York, the airplane stalled and crashed into a residence in Clarence Center, New York.
Lubbock, TX - January 27, 2009
While on an instrument approach in icing conditions, the airplane stalled and crashed short of the runway at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, Lubbock, Texas.
Santa Maria, CA - January 2, 2006
After departure and during the cruise climb phase, the flight encountered airframe ice and departed from controlled flight.
Fredericton, New Brunswick - December 16, 1997
While attempting a go-around a regional jet stalled aerodynamically and struck the runway.
Monroe, Michigan - January 9, 1997
The crew of an EMB-120 experienced an uncommanded roll excursion and crashed while being vectored for an approach.
Roselawn, Indiana - October 31, 1994
The crew of an ATR-72 experienced an uncommanded roll excursion and crashed during a rapid descent.
Aircraft Icing: A Pilot's Guide by Terry T. Lankford: From two-seat single-engine aircraft to jumbo 777s, icing is a silent creeper and one of the industry's hottest concerns. Covers all aspects of aircraft icing-ground, airframe, and induction. Provides solid foundation of icing theory and physics without superfluous meteorological concepts. Teaches pilots how to interpret icing forecasts and reports and integrate specific aircraft and engine considerations. Discusses practical procedures to deal with icing conditions throughout flight, from taxi to touchdown.

Severe Weather Flying by Dennis Newton: Focusing on detection and avoidance of severe weather, this book teaches pilots how to lessen their chances of being caught in extreme weather conditions. Written so that anyone can understand complex meteorological terms, it attempts to bring across the most crucial principles that pilots can use to fly more wisely. Different weather conditions, including lightning, icing, and wind shear, and their effect on flying are discussed in detail.

Weather Flying by Robert N. Buck: Weather Flying is regarded in the industry as the bible of weather flying. Robert Buck, a general aviation and commercial pilot with tens of thousands of hours of flight time, explains weather in a nontechnical way, giving pilots useful understanding of weather and practical knowledge of how to judge it and fly it. Covers weather flying psychology, en route weather changes, radar and how to use it, taking off in bad weather, and much more. Winner of the Flight Safety Foundation's Publication Award; recommended by the FAA.

Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Air Safety Foundation
Chartered in 1950, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Air Safety Foundation is dedicated to providing aviation education and safety programs for general aviation. The mission of the Foundation is to save lives and promote General Aviation Safety.
Ice Induced Stall Pilot Training
Training video for pilots created by NASA and the FAA.
NOAA Aviation Weather Center
The Aviation Weather Center delivers consistent, timely and accurate weather information for the world airspace system.
Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
The CAA is the UK's independent aviation regulator, with all civil aviation regulatory functions (economic regulation, airspace policy, safety regulation and consumer protection) integrated within a single specialist body.
European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
EASA is an agency of the European Union which has been given specific regulatory and executive tasks in the field of aviation safety. The Agency constitutes a key part of the European Union's strategy to establish and maintain a high uniform level of civil aviation safety in Europe.
Aviation Weather Center Icing Tools
Aviation Weather Center Icing Advisories, Observations and Forecasts.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
The FAA is responsible for the safety of civil aviation in the United States. Its major roles include: regulating civil aviation to promote safety, encouraging and developing civil aeronautics, developing and operating a system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft, researching and developing the National Airspace System and civil aeronautics, developing and carrying out programs to control aircraft noise and other environmental effects of civil aviation, and regulating U.S. commercial space transportation.
Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS)
The ASRS collects, analyzes, and responds to voluntarily submitted aviation safety incident reports in order to lessen the likelihood of aviation accidents.
Flight Safety Foundation
An independent, nonpolitical, nonprofit, international organization offering an objective view of aviation safety developments, the Foundation uses the Internet and this w eb site to maximize dissemination of its publications, seminars, special reports, and calendar of events.
Joint Aviation Authorities
The Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) is an associated body of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) representing the civil aviation regulatory authorities of a number of European States who have agreed to co-operate in developing and implementing common safety regulatory standards and procedures. This co-operation is intended to provide high and consistent standards of safety and a "level playing-field" for competition in Europe. Much emphasis is also placed on harmonising the JAA regulations with those of the USA.
NTSB Accident/Incident Database
The National Transportation Safety Board's Aviation Accident/Incident Database.
